I'm not quite ready to let go of summer.
However a sweet friend will be hosting a Halloween Tablescape Blog Hop Party, and I will be working on my tablescape this weekend. This is summer's last hurrah!
Happy Friday, Friends!
Didn't you just love this week's lesson? I know that I did! :D I also enjoyed the prayer. God's love is steadfast. It never changes.
I'm in a book club at church, and we are currently reading Seasons of Your Heart by Macrina Wiederkehr. The first season we covered today was the season of wonder. Our teacher shared with us a poem by Hannah Rosenberg from her book entitled Same.
Me as a Woman, me as a girlWe met the other day.Me as a woman, me as a girl.We looked each other up and down.Shy at first. It’s you? We both said, laughing. It’s you?Me as a girl spoke first. I like how you goWalking whenever you want. How you drinkCoffee by the window and write, like I alwaysThought I would. I love your home, she said, looking around. It feels just right.I’d like to live here, too.I hoped you would, me as a woman said.I love your confidence. How proud you are.How special you feel. Not always, me as a girl said. Sometimes I feel sad.Sometimes I am cruel. We all do. We all are, me as a woman said.Me as a woman and me as a girl looked at each other. We can’t exist at the same time, not exactly, but maybea part of me can stay with you somehow? asked the girl.Me as a woman smiled. I’d like that, she said.I’ve been waiting my whole life to take care of someone like you.
We also had a writing prompt where we were asked what we would say to our child self. This was difficult for me because I did not have the happiest of childhoods. For one thing, I was an only child, and my parents divorced when I was three.
But what this lesson from Peace With the Psalms reminds me of is that God is not constrained by time because he lives outside of it. He is still comforting my childhood self, wiping away my tears and showing me his steadfast love.
Both of these lessons dovetail quite nicely, and I would like for you to think about what you would say to the child version of you.
Here is this week's scripture from Psalm 136:
One seasonal thing I'm enjoying right now is the abundance (and variety) of chrysanthemums, especially at our local farmers' markets. I love them! They remind me of fall football games in the South (our dates would give them to us at football games, especially homecoming).

Oh wow, speaking to my younger self and reading of your situation... heavy topics for this Friday! I believed in God then, and I belive in God now. He will be with us through every stage, every challenge, and every joy. I want my J to know Him and feel that comfort too. She is an only, and young like you were, as her parents separate. 💔.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy weekend, friends. I'm off to visit J this morning.while Mr. P. Goes back to bed, nursing a nasty cold-like virus thats going around.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI liked the speaking to my younger self reading, thank you for sharing.
I did not grow up knowing Jesus. I have a long story... someday maybe we all can meet and share stories.
My mom was a Jehovah Witness when I was little. I remember being taken out of the classroom for Christmas and other events. During second grade it all stopped, I started to participate in everything in school. I never did get a clear answer from my parents about this time period.
Anyway, it was not until I was 23 that I started to learn about Jesus.
I am just so thankful God was watching out for me all that time during my childhood.
Prayer request...
I have the cold-virus, maybe the one that Mr. P has that Rita mentions above. It has been nasty. Thank you for the prayers.
Carla
Isn’t it a comfort that God’s love endures forever and His love has mercy and forgiveness.
ReplyDeleteI love the Me as a Woman and Me as a Child. I’m like Rita and always believed in God. Me as a child, always tried to do the right thing, and me as a woman still does.
Prayers for all of you and have a great weekend. Love and blessings!
Ohhhh to talk to the younger version of myself. I also did not have the best of childhood. I had an absent father and a mother that did not treat me as a daughter but more as her hired help. I missed a lot of childhood having to be so responsible and keeping the household going. I remember looking up at the clouds on a beautiful summer day. Laying in the grass and seeing what animals I could find in the cloud formations. After a rain storm riding my bike through the flooded streets. I wish I would have made myself have more childhood days than responsible adult type days. The good news is that when I became a mom I made sure my girls ran free and were able to enjoy their childhood. I made sure I was the mom that took on the responsibilities and my girls could enjoy all aspects of childhood and growing up.
